Controlling Light

Posted on 05 February 2009 by tcp

In working on an advertising campaign for one of our client’s, we used a stock image of a beer stein in the piece we were designing. Although the image worked well given the context of the design, it sparked my interest as to whether I could do better. The image to the left was made in broad daylight, using three strobes (flashes) to control how much light hit the stein, and where.

The remaining images below came through experimenting with controlling light (and darkness for that matter). I’m quite happy with the results and I’ve come to really like the beer stine image.

Commercial printer Cenveo McLaren Morris & Todd hired me to shoot and construct two advertisements that they would then use in the Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball Club promotional magazine. Below are the portrait and landscape shots that were envisioned and realized for this subject. The client wanted a very specific look and feel to their ads and were completely happy with the end result.

Ashes of Roses

Ashes of Roses (ashesofroses.ca) is owned and operated by my lovely wife Dana. He “handcrafted vintage-inspired designs” are unique and truly magnificant. She has participated in boutique craft shows, taken custom orders, and sells her product online. So when she asked me to take some product shots of her work, it was an easy answer. Please have a look below for some images I have made of her work for her most recent craft show entry.
