It’s like riding a bike after years of not being on one. You just fall into a rhythm and let your feelings take over. That’s what I felt last Friday night when I photographed The Tragically Hip at a special intimate theatre gig at the Danforth Music Hall. The band has recently returned to the scene with a new album and have followed with an extensive multi-night tour. This show was deemed a “warm-up show” when really, it was clear the band was (and is) in top form.

My favourite band, The Tragically Hip played one of my favourite venues to see them in, The Air Canada Centre. I was again very blessed to be able to shoot the Hip from such a close range with my pro gear. As you will see below, I believe I have been really able to capture the essence of The Hip’s live show. There is so much energy, it just exudes from my photos. As always, I am quite happy with the results.

Not five days after the Barrie show, I was granted my first access to the media pit at a concert. For three songs, I would have the best vantage point in the house, shooting my favourite band: The Tragically Hip.

Alongside other media shooters, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed, a bit anxious, but really, really excited. I maneuvered into position as the lights dimmed and the band hit the stage. It was the shortest 15 minutes of my life but one of the most exhilarating. Thanks again to MAv and the Hip’s management team for really making a dream come true.

I’ve been shooting my favourite rock band, the Tragically Hip for many years now but this concert, at the Barrie Molson Centre in early 2007 was monumental for my photography career. You see, it was one of the first concerts that I was able to shoot with a pro camera. Shortly after this show, it was at that point that I also started to get noticed by the Hip’s webmaster and their management team. These pictures really have led the way for the subsequent concerts I have shot. I have since had a wonderful working relationship with them and hope that it will continue for many years to come.
